A Brake Pedal That Pushes Back. Seriously.

You can’t open a sim racing forum right now without someone asking whether an active pedal is “worth it”. Overtake, GTPlanet, Discord. Same debate everywhere. And the same answer everywhere: “it depends”. Which helps nobody.

So let me do it differently. I’ll tell you who this stuff actually helps, who it doesn’t, and why most people who buy one don’t get any faster.

What An Active Pedal Actually Is

A regular load cell pedal measures how much force you’re applying. Full stop. The resistance comes from a spring, an elastomer, or a hydraulic setup. Something mechanical that feels the same every time, no matter what’s happening on screen.

An active pedal, like the Simucube ActivePedal or the MOZA mBooster, has a motor that reacts in real time to what’s happening in the sim. Wheel locking up? The pedal shoves back. ABS kicking in? You feel pulses through your foot. It’s force feedback, but for your brake instead of your wheel.

Sounds cool. It is cool. But cool and necessary are two very different things.

The Case For a Good Load Cell (You’re Not Wrong)

Let me be honest: 95% of sim racers don’t need an active pedal. The fast ones included.

A solid load cell pedal (somewhere in the €300 to €900 range) already gives you nearly everything you need to brake consistently. Linear force buildup, decent travel, a progressive curve you can tune yourself. For most rFactor 2, ACC, or iRacing sessions, that’s just… enough.

Here’s the thing nobody wants to admit: plenty of fast lap times still get set on pedals that have sat in a rig for years, untouched. Consistency wins races, not the newest tech. A pedal that feels exactly the same every single time, one your muscle memory can actually build on, is often worth more than one that keeps feeding your brain new information it hasn’t learned to process yet.

And that’s where the whole debate falls apart. People buy an ActivePedal hoping to get faster. That doesn’t happen automatically. You have to learn what the feedback means first. Sometimes that takes weeks.

Where Active Pedals Actually Earn Their Keep

But (and here’s my unpopular opinion) for a specific group of racers, the difference isn’t subtle. It’s night and day.

Want to genuinely feel ABS behavior in cars that have it (GT3 in ACC, say)? An active pedal gives you information a load cell simply can’t fake. You feel the system pulsing as it engages. That’s not a gimmick. That’s data you’d otherwise only get from a telemetry overlay.

Same story with wheel lockups in cars without ABS, like open-wheelers and older GT machines. That progressive shift in resistance right as a tire crosses its grip limit is exactly the signal your foot would pick up in real life. On a load cell pedal, you’re guessing based on sound and whatever’s on screen. On an active pedal, you feel it.

For endurance racers grinding out multi-hour stints, that extra feedback genuinely cuts down fatigue. Less guessing, less overcompensating, fewer late-stint mistakes. Not nothing when you’re simulating six hours of Nürburgring.

MOZA mBooster: The Cheap Backdoor Into Active Pedal Territory

Here’s where it gets interesting. The Simucube ActivePedal, depending on the version, runs somewhere between €1300 and €2000. That’s a full new pedal, not an add-on.

MOZA did something smart with the mBooster: an active pedal for around €799 standalone, or just under €1100 in a set with a CRP2 throttle. Still a lot of money. But roughly half of what Simucube asks.

Is it as refined as Simucube’s solution? No. The mBooster is the entry point into this category, not the halo product. But it drags the price down to something a serious hobbyist can actually justify, instead of leaving this tech exclusively to esports teams with sponsorship money.

That’s exactly why this category is blowing up in community discussions right now. Two years ago, this stuff was only for people with factory contracts. Now you’re looking at prices comparable to a high-end direct drive wheelbase.

The Diminishing Returns Nobody Talks About

Time for an ugly truth: the jump from a mediocre pedal (think stock pedals bundled with a wheelbase) to a good load cell pedal is massive. You feel it in your very first session.

The jump from a good load cell to an active pedal is… subtler. Way subtler than the marketing wants you to believe. You’re not buying 40% more enjoyment for 200% more money. You’re buying a new layer of information you have to learn to read, in situations that are honestly pretty specific: ABS behavior, extreme lockups, long-distance fatigue management.

If you mostly drive arcade-ish content, or cars without complex brake behavior, that money is largely wasted. Sorry, but it’s the truth.

So Who Should Actually Buy One

Let me make this simple. Consider an active pedal if at least two of these apply to you:

  • You seriously race GT3/GT4 content with ABS and want to actually feel that behavior instead of interpreting it.
  • You race open-wheel or classic cars without ABS and want precision finding the lockup limit.
  • You do endurance racing and want every edge you can get for managing fatigue.
  • You already run a top-tier direct drive wheelbase and load cell pedal, and the pedal is genuinely the last weak link in your setup.
  • Budget simply isn’t a concern. In which case you didn’t need this article.

If you’re chasing more speed in average club races, spend that money on a coaching session, or just more laps. Boring advice. Also the right advice.

My Verdict (Disagree If You Want)

Active pedals aren’t a scam. They do what they promise, and the tech is genuinely impressive. But they’re not a replacement for a good load cell pedal in most everyday cases. They’re an addition for specific, often advanced racing scenarios.

If you’re buying your first serious pedal set right now: go for a good load cell. Learn your braking. Get faster with what you already have. Come back for an active pedal later, once you actually hit the ceiling of what a load cell can tell you.

That ceiling exists. It’s just higher than the marketing wants you to think.
